MovieTowne was but a dream of Derek Chin back in 1999 but in 20 years the dream has manifested into a thriving empire of movie theatres and family entertainment spaces. Derek’s dream of high quality entertainment spaces and movie theatres became a reality in November 2002 with the opening of the 10 screen MovieTowne Port of Spain. Over the years steady growth called for the opening of the Chaguanas location (8 screens), Tobago (4 screens) and San Fernando (9 screens). Having grown up in Guyana Derek, now Chairman, set his eyes on turning MovieTowne into a regional brand and bring it back to his homeland.
With four locations now under their belt the MovieTowne group knew they needed to up their game especially when launching in Derek’s hometown of Guyana. With a budget of $40M USD assigned to the mall and cinema project decisions were not being left to chance. Lighting specialists Streamline Systems were called in to work with the design team on a mythical world where dragons featured in the theatre’s lobby.
Michael Pereira, Director of Streamline Systems, took charge of the project and spent weeks bouncing ideas and concepts with designer Roger Myers of Myers Design Services. Pereira knew that the mythical world of dragons meant a no holds barred approach to the lighting and if there was an opportunity to light a lobby in far out colours this was it! Pereira and the team were settled on Blizzard Professional’s EXA series which include RGBAW+UV LEDs for the ultimate in flexibility and the added pop of UV for those eerie dragons.
Twenty-Eight (28) Blizzard Professional Colorise EXA fixtures form uplights on the main perimeter wall while and additional six (6) units form the main spotlights focused on the featured dragons. Blizzard’s Colorise EXA feature 12 * 15W RGBAW+UV LEDs and built in AnyFi™ wireless control.
Sixteen (16) Blizzard Professional Motif Sketch fixtures were used for powerful yet small fixtures which were hidden among the “bushes” and artefacts in the lobby, “These fixtures really filled in the gaps and brought the venue together as a holistic environment” said Pereira. Blizzard Professional Motif Sketch feature 7x 3-watt TRI-color RGB LEDs.
While the independent DMX control of fixtures offers ample chases and movement Pereira wanted one last effect, a bit of a surprise which really caught everyone’s eyes. We installed two Blizzard Professional G-Mix 200 LED moving heads with custom made Rosco gobos of the MovieTowne logo. During different scenes the MovieTowne logo can be seen among the trees or moving gracefully across the lobby floor, often followed closely behind by a line of kids trying to catch it!
Being part of a wider mall project Pereira and his team also incorporated lighting designs throughout the mall. Being charged with the design and project management of the mall’s lighting really gave the Streamline Systems team the ability to create a friendly atmosphere for shopping and restaurants while still adding a pop of colour to the mall which ties back into the theatre.
Almost a mile of high-powered 120 volt 120 LED tapelight was installed as cove lighting throughout the mall while Streamline added some colour to the mall’s lobby. The lobby is faced, front and back, with two large mural prints. The first wall measuring an impressive 71 foot by 35 foot and washed with natural light making any artificial lighting a challenge. Streamline specified Blizzard Professional’s TOURnado™ Zoom fixtures. While the team knew that they won’t be able to achieve perfect coverage they took advantage of the zoom fixture to create an ever moving landscape of colour for a dynamic appearance. Blizzard Professional’s TOURnado Zoom features an IP65 rated fixture with 36* 3W RGBAW LEDs and a motorized 10°-40° zoomable lens. Just opposite was another feature wall, 38 foot wide by 16 foot high and sandwiched between massive windows and LED screens. Streamline again turned to Blizzard Professional and their Motif Vignette fixtures. A total of twenty fixtures were installed in a double line to ensure adequate brightness and chase control via DMX.
Flanking either side of the lobby’s three floors and between the focal walls Streamline wanted to take advantage of the architectural columns and decided to illuminate the edges of these columns with RGB tapelight. With each column on each floor on its own DMX address Streamline again took individual control of colour and movement tying the columns in with the focal walls all via touch screen control.
Streamline Systems is a low voltage integrator often featured for their installations across the Caribbean. Streamline specialises in audio, video, lighting, security and acoustic integration.
The bite-sized island of Mustique, measuring just 5.7 sq km, is just enough space to house the most elite clientelé, wild parties, sleepless nights and lazy days while keeping the place confidential. The little morsel of land lays just 100 miles west of Barbados in the Caribbean chain and what is a bright light attraction for celebrities, actually doesn’t have any streetlights, a feature that grows on you quite quickly.
In 1958, Lord Glenconner, Colin Tennant, arrived on Mustique and bought the island for just £45,000, despite the fact it had no roads, no jetties and no running water. Initial ambitions were to see it thrive as a cotton plantation, but these plans didn’t prove economically viable and Colin looked for other ways to develop the island. Having gifted his good friend, Princess Margaret a plot in 1960, there was considerable media interest in Mustique as a destination and in 1968 he formed the Mustique Company to develop a private island hideaway for the rich and famous. Fast-forward to 2018 and the island is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of The Mustique Company.
At focal point on the island is Basil’s Bar, where for more than 40 years Basil Charles has served regulars their favourite tipple. In commemoration of the anniversary, Basil’s Bar has been refurbished, by none other than, Philippe Starck. Part of this refurbishment included the design and installation of audio, video and lighting systems; cue the services of Streamline Systems.
Streamline Systems has been at the forefront of low voltage engineering and installation and maintenance since 2007 and is well-known for its work across the Caribbean. CTO of The Mustique Company, Leigh Fereday, contacted Michael Pereira, Director of Streamline Systems to take up the challenge.
Streamline was given what could be considered a simple task: ‘light the stage and a small area for the Wednesday night Jump Up party’. But lead Lighting Designer and Director, Michael wanted to ensure he got it just right. He said: “We needed to install a modern lighting system, which could be seen in any club in London or NYC but make it look at home, outdoors, on a beachfront, on an island that doesn’t even accustomed to streetlights. And we needed to achieve all this, while not stepping on Philippe Starck’s toes.
“We viewed the property from multiple angles and wanted to give it a bang, without taking the bar out of its element or removing natural beauty. We wanted to highlight both height and depth so uplighting the coconut trees was balanced with the lighting of the surrounding ocean, all with high quality RGBW fixtures which will stand up to the salt water. The DTS DIVE 6 fixtures fitted the bill perfectly with their IP68 stainless steel and bronze body,” Michael continued.
The dancefloor in front of the stage had its own challenges, as it’s nestled between gazebos and is fully open to the elements. A total of 16 smaller DTS fixtures, the DTS DIVE3’s wash the main dancefloor, while standing up to the salt air and Caribbean sun. Michael added: “Every DTS fixture was installed on its own channel of the DTS DriveNet 832 to ensure complete control and to create movement and effects without the need for moving heads in the open air harsh environment.”
A second dancefloor was created within one of the gazebos, while this was still open air, Streamline had a ceiling to work with. It was within this area that Michael and his team needed to create some actual movement, but he wanted not only some beams, but also the ability to show some effects and movement without throwing a bright beam of light. The Blizzard Wink was perfect, creating a subtle colour effect, and on occasion, get a tight beam effect.
Streamline needed to find a way to incorporate the bar into some of the RGBW lighting design around it, without effecting Philippe overall design or the specific warm white lighting of hand selected artefacts. “We were able to install a pair of Blizzard TOURnado IP EXA fixtures to uplight the high ceiling above the bar. This worked perfectly as the opposing fixtures created interesting effects amongst the wooden beams and the built in RGBAW+UV LEDs really brought something new to the space,” said Michael.
The stage is well covered with an array of five Blizzard Motif Vignette RGBW fixtures and a pair of TOURnado IP EXA fixtures. This combination allows light for illuminating performances and excellent control over colour for the background and effects.
Lighting system control is carried out either via the 23-inch touchscreen in the main control room or wirelessly via phones and tablets. This wireless feature is superb during small events and really captures the easy going vibe of the space.
Streamline installed a 10ft Draper Nocturne+ crank-operated projection screen for the viewing of the occasional presentation, documentary and naturally just in time for the World Cup 2018. The projector of choice was the NEC PA653UL laser projector, which came with the ultimate five-year warranty and all protected in the Tempest Breeze case.
Michael concluded: “Special thanks to Jim Preston, our master of logistics, Leigh Fereday for trusting in our vision even as we arrived with thousands of feet of cable to be hidden among your gazebos, and to Operations Director, Nic Welch, who was never afraid to crawl around the sea urchins at night in order to aim our underwater lights. On our next visit we hope to stay in the Les Jolies Eaux villa, currently renting at £27,000 a week – appropriate mic drop.”
Michael Pereira of Trinidad & Tobago based creative design and engineering practice, Streamline Systems, specified Robe and Anolis lighting fixtures for a new installation at the landmark night destination, Club India Nex 5.0HD in Chaguanas, Trinidad.
This was an integral element of a major refurbishment and technical upgrade to the 800 capacity club, which has enjoyed great success and a high profile over the last five years. The owner wanted a fresh new look to ensure they keep at the forefront of trend-setting on the island.
Michael chose 10 Robin LEDBeam 100 moving lights and two Robe Faze 800 FT Pro hazer for atmospherics; together with 72 Anolis ArcSource 4MC LED fixtures for the ceiling grid, with another 16 used to downlight a set of glass-bead chandeliers.
The LEDBeam 100s are positioned at the front and back of the stage areas and are used in a truly ‘multi-functional’ sense for lighting both live performances and club nights and for their beams, strobing and wash effects. With the inbuilt selection of authentic colour temperature whites, they also make very effective artist key-lighting.
Above the lighting rig on the stage is the grid of 72 Anolis ArcSource 4MC downlighters, programmed to produce amazing mesmerising matrix style effects.
Michael chose the LEDBeam 100s because they are small and light weight. “They really stand out and make a statement in the space,” he said.
The low power consumption is a a bonus as the owner previously used 575W moving lights, each of which had to have its own electrical circuit.
“It’s dramatically reduced the heat and electricity used, as well as increased the reliability and comfort for everyone using the stage and dancefloor,” Micheal continued.
The lights are controlled via a LightJockey system which is run day-to-day by a house lighting engineer.
The Robe and Anolis fixtures were all supplied through Robe’s US headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Michael worked closely with Robe’s own club lighting specialist, David Chesal.
Streamline Systems was approached to design and install sound, video, acoustic treatment, and lighting systems into the most advanced nightclub in Suriname.
The club stands out with elite equipment for sound, video and lighting. (10) EVF-1122D/126 cover the venue with perfect quality sound at high SPL while (4) QRX218S subwoofers fill in the low end. The speaker system is powered via (7) CPS2.12 120V which allow the system to cruise along even when the club is at its prime. A pair of ZXA1-90 speakers accompany the DJ as monitors and the RE-2N7 is in use by the DJ.
With all this power it was clear that acoustic treatment would be needed for to protect those needing to rest in the hotel from those wanting to party in the club. Streamline turned to Auralex Acoustics and designed a multi layered system to keep acoustic frequencies from exiting the club. Approximately (1100) sheets of Auralex 2” Mineral fiber was installed into the walls and ceilings, sandwiched between layers of Auralex SheetBlok sound barrier material. Finally Auralex StopGap acoustical sealant was used to seal any air spaces around electrical boxes air vents and cutouts.
No expense was spared in the club as Streamline specified the Pioneer DJ DJM-2000NXS mixer and a pair of CDJ-2000NXS multi players. Lighting systems were again top of the line with equipment from Robe lighting, Anolis and X-Laser with dual touchscreen control using Martin Light Jockey and Pangolyn QuickShow laser control software. Streamline’s engineers selected the Robe Robin 100 LED beams as the main moving heads for the venue. The Robin’s ultra fast movement and smooth color mixing were able to create an amazing club vibe with just the use of six moving heads! The entire venue was wrapped with (72) Anolis ArcSource 4MC, these are excellent quality RGBW downlighters which perfectly complement the color mixing of the Robe moving heads. Additional effects included (6) Hanson Pro Systems GrUV blacklights with built in effects and (2) Hanson Pro Systems CO2-S fixtures for CO2 effects.
X-laser was turned to for their great build quality on lasers, (8) X-Laser X-Pod Red and (8) X-Laser X-Pod Green were used in addition to bounce mirrors to create a mesmerizing mesh of lasers bouncing safely above one’s heads. The feature laser was chosen to be the X-Laser Mobil Beat MK-5, a full color RGB laser. We decided to control the Mobil beat via Pangolyn’s QuickShow ILDA software to create a truly immersive show complete with animations, logos of the club, text and wicked areal shows. Overall lighting control via Martin Light Jockey 2 with touch screen.
